A Review on Solutions for Mitigating Utility Capacitor Switching Transients

Utility capacitor switching operations can generate transients such as overvoltage and high inrush current. These switching transients may cause damages or misoperations of other power system components as well as the protective devices of transient-sensitive loads. This paper reviews the major solutions for mitigating the transients caused by the utility capacitor switching. Common seen solutions are the switch with a preinserted resistor or an inductor, synchronously closing techniques employed on switches, series reactors, surge arrestors, isolating reactors for transient-sensitive loads, and power-electronic controlled switches. Representative simulation results that are obtained from using EMTP are also presented to evaluate the effectiveness of some of the reviewed solutions.
