International Headache Society classification of trigeminal autonomic cephalgias (TACs)

From a clinical standpoint there are certain types of headache with such characteristic and overlapping clinical features that it is tempting to look for links among them. Often times the mere mention of marked lacrimation or conjunctival injection will trigger an almost reflex enquiry about nasal stuffiness or ptosis. Like Tulp more than three centuries ago,1 we have been struck by the features of parasympathetic autonomic activation. Our clinical interest and experience with short-lasting headaches has lead us to propose revisions (Table 14.1) to the Cluster Headache Section (3)2 of the International Headache Society (IHS) diagnosticcriteria.3
