The design, construction and testing of a large coaxial line, which is much larger than commercially available ones and suitable for soil and sandstone measurements, is reported. An improved technique that employs a minimisation scheme to extract the dielectric properties of the sample is described. It is demonstrated that this system is efficient and accurate to determine the dielectric properties of various materials.
