CoDocs: An Electronic Document Management System Supporting Effective Collaborative Work

The World Wide Web(Berners-Lee and et al. 1994) is rapidly emerging as an attractive technology for a platform to develop systems for electronic document management and collaborative work, and there are lots of such systems already developed or in progress. Among those systems, some collaborative work systems support the concept of shared workspace(Bentley and et al. 1997, Bentley, Horstmann, and Trevor 1997, Frank 1997, Roseman and Greenburg 1996) which enables members of a work group easily share information for collaborative work. Since such information is shared mainly as a form of electronic document, a great deal of documents are created, read and modified during collaborative work. Moreover, after collaborative work is completed, many of those documents are still useful for the associated members and other peoples who want to refer those documents for their own purpose. So, it is desirable to integrate the shared workspace feature into electronic document management systems. In this paper, we describe an electronic document management system called CoDocs, which supports shared workspaces for collaborative work as well as manages electronic documents systematically.
