摘要

Smut is often observed on the surface adjacent to the weld bead during welding aluminum alloys in GMAW. But smut is not observed in GTAW and is not affected by the chemical composition of the base metal. Systematic study on this smut generation has hardly been conducted, as it does not affect the joint strength and is removed easily by wire-brushing. For most of the industrial products, however, smut removal is performed. So, it is available for cost saving in the industry to reduce the quantity of smut or to prevent its generation. In this paper, the effect of welding conditions on the generation of the smut is described.
