Integrally geared centrifugal compressors continue to gain acceptance in process gas applications as an alternative to traditional overhung and between bearing centrifugal compressors, and even in some reciprocating compressor applications. Whencompared to traditional multistage centrifugal compressors, they can provide savings in initial capital cost by performing the same compression ratio with a smaller number of stages; furthermore, by mounting compressor, gearbox, drive train and allauxiliary systems on the same skid, footprint and field installation costs can be reduced. When compared to reciprocating compressors, they offer higher reliability and savings in reduced downtime and maintenance costs. They also offer a great deal of flexibility in packaging configurations, to suit the specific requirements and challenges ofeach application.Originally developed for air, Integrally Geared Process Gas Compressors have demonstrated the necessary high levels of safety, reliability and robustness, and today are routinely specified as an appropriate alternative to traditional API-617 compressors.Recognition of this fact is why a new chapter dedicated to Integrally Geared Centrifugal Compressors is being incorporated into the upcoming 7th edition of API-617.
