The Rokkasho Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Center plans to commence from the year 2000 the operation of disposal facility to dispose of dry active waste such as metals, generated at nuclear power plants. Dry active wastes is solidified to waste packages for disposal at the Center. It is stipulated by law that prior to disposal, the radioactive concentrations of each waste package must be determined with respect to eleven regulated nuclides. A well-laid sampling and analysis plan which took into account the characteristic features of dry active waste was implemented over about five years. Based on the results of analyzing and evaluating the nuclide analysis data obtained, a method for determining the radioactive concentrations of waste packages has been established, which uses the scaling factor method as a principal technique.
