A wire sawing method produces highly radioactive liquid waste when it is applied to cut highly radioactivated concrete generated from decommissioning of an atomic power station. This liquid waste contains high amount of concrete and steel powders and so is not appropriate to be treated by conventional treatment system such as concentrator and demineralizer in ordinary atomic power station. A pretreatment system, therefore, has been developed which made the treatment of liquid waste containing concrete and steel powders possible by conventional radioactive waste treatment system. This research and development was carried out by a joint study with ten electric power companies in Japan, TOSHIBA and HITACHI. We developed appropriate pretreatment systems for this liquid waste.
