A large-scale in-situ experiment was conducted in Kamaishi mine. The major objectives of this thermo-hydro-mechanical (T-H-M) test at Kamaishi mine were to evaluate applicability of the engineered barrier technology, to observe near field coupled T-H-M phenomena in situ and to increase the confidence of coupled T-H-M models. The test pit with a diameter of 1.7 m and a depth of 5.0 m was excavated at the floor of drift. The heater was composed of heater frame with a diameter of 1.04 m and a height of 2.0 m and electric heater that was installed in the heater frame. The heater was placed in the center of the pit and buffer material was compacted around the heater at the field. The duration of heating phase was 250 days and that of cooling phase was 180 days. The heater surface was controlled to be 100°C during the heating phase. A number of sensors were installed in both buffer and rock mass during the test. The field experiment leads to a better understanding of the behavior of the T-H-M phenomena in the near field. JNC developed T-H-M model to evaluate the phenomena in the unsaturated buffer. Comparison between measurements and predictions showed good agreement.
