The aim of the present study is to relate HF radar observations of water waves to the underlying oceanic currents by computing the Doppler shifted phase speed of the waves. Two models are employed in the calculation, an inviscid model and theLaunder -Spalding turbulence model. Analytical expressions for the phase speed are obtained for each model, and are checked by numerical calculations. Our key result is that the Doppler shifting of the waves is essentially an inviscid effect, and isindependent of the turbulence model.
