Desert particle is one of important sources of aerosols and should be investigated carefully. The large area of desert in North and West China is the key origin of desert particles, especially in the spring when there are often sandstorms. The great quantities of desert particles can go into the troposphere and be transported to downwind areas with the airflow, thus affecting the air quality in these areas. In April and May of 1996 and 1997, desert particle observations were carried out in Jilantai and Youqi of Arlashan in the border land of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Gansu Province. This paper addresses mainly the mass concentration and diameter distribution of desert particles. It is shown that the background aerosol pollution is very low in the desert areas while in the sandstorms the pollution increases sharply and the diameter distribution changes somewhat. In the bad weather most particles are in the diameter of 3 ~ 4μm, greater than the normal peak value.
