The modified structural details of horizontal stiffeners to meet the requirement of robotics welding are needed in the plate girder fabrication in Japan.The larger stiffener-end-gaps are desirable to improve the movability of welding robots.In this research,the effects of horizontal-stiffener-end-gaps on the ultimate strength of girders under bending are investigated.Static loading tests are carried out for girders with different stiffener-end-gaps.Elasto-plastic large-deflection analysis is performed by FEM to obtain the relationship between the reduction fo the ultimate strength and the size of stiffener-end-gaps.
