Active aeration was tested as a way to accelerate the conversion of a landfill body to the status of low biological activity. During the test, the development of the changes within the landfill body was documented through changes in the composition of landfill gas, the temperature, and the in situ respiration rate. The biological activity, determined by the mean in situ respiration rate, was high in the area where active aeration was applied. Due to high biological activity, temperature increased up to 70 deg. A geophysical survey of the landfill showed that the electrical resistivity of the landfill body decreased as stabilization proceeded.
