Here we describe the decolorization and degradation of the azo dyes orange G, new cocine and tartrazine and of the natural dyes cochineal (car-minic acid) and annatto (norbixin) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Pleurotus sajor caju, following their growth or eight to twelve days in each of the dyes or in a combination of synthetic dyes or of natural dyes. Effluent from a natural dye plant was also studied. Both fungi showed similar decolorization of new coccine, orange G and cochineal as determined by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. P. chrysosporium was able to efficiently decolorize the natural dyes, individually or in combination, and also the natural dyes containing industrial effluent. degradation of the dyes, as measured by reversed-phase HPLC on a C_(18) column, was observed for decolorized samples and varied with each strain as did the type and activities of the ligninolytic enzymes present in the culture supernatants.
