Earthfill embankment dams can become the focus of intense geotechnical investigations following the detection of a dam performance deficiency. The existing instrumentation systems, which were usually installed during the original construction to provide a general monitoring ability, are often found to be either inadequate or inappropriate for the comprehensive monitoring of a specific problem. Instrumentation upgrades and additions are therefore, often required.
