In this paper field measurements are reported for a raft foundation of a building. Data have been obtained for the settlements during the entire construction process at a number of representative points on the raft foundation. Careful analysis of the measured settlements is carried out to get insight into the deformation mechanism. A numerical model based on the finite prism element method is also proposed to compute both the deformation and inner force of the raft foundation. Numerical results are compared with the measured values to validate the numerical model. Based on these analyses, some valuable suggestions are given with regard to the design of such type of foundations.
