This paper discusses the monitoring and predicting of settlements and consolidation periods, using field observatioonal methods (Asaoka 1978 and Tan 1993), for the Lekir Coastal Development Projuect, a land reclamation scheme off Malaysia's west coast. After an extensive study of the settlement data obtained from daily surveys of 146 settlement markers across the reclamation area, it was concluded that the ultimate settlement could be predicted very satisfactorily with both methods. Provided that sufficient data of a representative number of settlement markers is obtained during the period when the final load is applied, field observational methods produce meaningful predictions. However, for the effective use of these methods on reclamation projects, primary compression must be the decisive component of the total settlement and secondary compression must be relatively small.
