Development works near existing tunnels need to be carried out with extra cares so as to protect public safety and ensure public conventience. The Code of Practice for Railway Protection by LTA specified that any disturbance to the MRT structures must be minimal and kept within its epecified allowable limits. In order to monitor this effect, a detailed monitoring system is required. This paper will present the first fully automatic monitoring system implemented on site in 1992 in Singapore using a 3-D Total Station from Switzerland, to monitor the changes in tunnel alignment during the construction of an adjacent development. The success on this monitoring system will be discussed. The recent development of another version by a Japanese company for the monitoring system will also be reported. Problems encountered when using these methods of monitoring and the system shortcomings will also be highlighted.
