Classification, certification and specification of instruments for field measurements

In geomechanics, the classification system for instrumentation and related equipment for data acquisition is normally based on simple metrological parmaeters. Data sheets are not always complete or based on the same terminology; often the most important characteristics are not mentioned at all. Similarly, requests from buyers, owners, consultants, and system designers do not always include all the necessary specifications to ensure the quality of the results. This paper is intended to be a starting point for a discussion of the needs for introducing standard methods of classifying and specifying instruments for field measurement applications that are acceptable to buyers, users and manufacturers alike. The following topics are presented in the paper: Instrumentation terminology, International classification systems already in use, The need for new specifications relevant to FMGM applications, and Instrument data sheets.
