This paper reports the test results on super-long bored piles beneath a to be constructed high rise building in Shanghai. Data obtained include the settlements at different load level as well as the distribution and development of axial forces in the pile. Analysis of the test results gives a better understanding of the bearing mechanism of such piles. These test results also provide evidence that the conventional design method for ordinary piles is no longer applicable for super-long piles. Necessary adaptations are indicated. Moreover, a simple method is proposed for the estimation of the settlement and bearing capacity of superlong bored piles, which may be used for preliminary design.
