A pilot-scale test was performed with the purpose of determining the effect produced by a surfactant ionic, Novel II, on hydrocarbon biodegradation in landfarming soils inoculated with commercial and indigenous bacterial strains. Inoculated soils were maintained outdoors for 210 days. The presence of the surfactant Novell II seems to reduce the biodegradation of the tested commercial strains. The rate of biodegradation obtained with the W2 indigenous strain is greater when the soil contains surfactant. Application of surfactants must be done with caution if commercial or indigenous bacteria are inoculated.
