Bacterial Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) and PotentialEffects of Surfactants on PAH Bioavailability

The purposes of this project were to evaluate whether indigenous microorganismsfrom polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)-contaminated soils produce surfactants (biosurfactants) as a means of enhancing the bioavailability of PAH; to improve the understanding of the general physiology of a diverse group of PAH-degrading bacteria; and to study in general how surfactants influence the biodegradation of hydrophobic chemicals.
