Inkjet-patterned, Organic Complementary Circuits Integrated with Polymer Mechanical Sensors

Printed p-type organic semiconductors have been extensively studied and have been previously used in flexible display applications. Their n-channel counterparts, on the other hand, have shown worse performance and stability, limiting the scope of electronic applications for printed organic electronics. Recent efforts on improving n-channel materials have been fruitful, and the availability of n- and p-channel solution-processed semiconductors enables the fabrication of complementary circuits [1, 2] which have the advantages of lower power consumption and better noise margins compared to unipolar circuits. Here, inkjet-printed organic complementary inverters were demonstrated, and the printed inverters were integrated with acceleration sensors to be part of a sensor system for monitoring potential brain injuries due to mechanical impact.
