摘要

Disposal of carbon dioxide (CO_2) generated from large point sources, such as power plants, by injection into deep, saline formations is considered to be one of the most promising long-term options for CO_2 sequestration. Once disposed in these deep formations (> 800 m), percent levels of CO_2 will dissolve in formation brines in the form of carbonic acid and other aqueous carbonate species. Interaction of the brine with formation solids may lead to dissolution or precipitation of specific minerals and further change the composition of the aqueous phase. The purpose of this investigation was to examine geochemical issues that are pertinent to CO_2 disposal in a formation in the midwestern United States.
