In order to develop a safe, permanent, and economic means of disposing of CO_2 as a solid carbonate, we have investigated the thermodynamics of the system MgO-SiO_2-H_2O-HCl-CO_2. Our goal is to determine the optimal pathway for the dissolution of magnesium rich mineral rock in a melt of hydrated MgCl_2 and the concurrent or subsequent formation of stable carbonates. The thermodynamic analysis forms the basis for future design implementations. As an encouraging result we point to the strong thermodynamic advantages of directly forming carbonates in the melt.
