As an attractive alternative for reducign CO_2 emission to the atmosphere, CO_2 capture and injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is drawing much interest from more and more petroleum industries. However, much recent emphasis was on technology development and application of the CO_2-EOR, while the associated environmental risks did not receive sufficient attention. In this study, a fuzzy risk assessment (FRA) approach is developed for assessing environmental risks associated with CO_2-EOR processes within a Canadian context. the FRA will be able to incorporate a variety of uncertain factors and relatinships within a general evaluation framework. Fuzzy cancer risks of different human exposure doses to four chemicals are calculated to form a fuzzy relation matrix. Integrated cancer risks are then obtained through further fuzzy synthesizing operation. Result of the case study indicates that reasonable solution have been obtained. Generally, although CO_2-EOR is economically and technologically feasible in western Canada, issues of its long-term environmental impacts and risks also need to be carefully addressed.
