Digital Libraries is an interdisciplinary field, where integration of a variety of computer science disciplines, library and information sciences, and social sciences creates a capability far greater than the sum of the parts. Furthermore (as in many such interdisciplinary fields), technical, social, and political issues arise which create challenges for the contributing fields. The DLxx series of conferences has provided a vehicle for the various international communities interested in furthering the field of digital libraries to exchange views and results, and identify valuable areas for future effort. This panel explores some of the technical, political, social, and economic issues as we move forward in such interdisciplinary research.
