An Integrated Solution of Radionavigation Systems in Europe

The negotiations on the establishment of a new LORAN C-System for North-West Europe and the North Atlantic were conducted between 1985 and 1992. They resulted in an international agreement signed by six Northwest European nations in 1992. This was the birthday of NELS. Over the years, the start of NELS became overshadowed by the coming up of satellite navigation systems. The situation developed in such a way that some people were of the opinion that satellite systems were up to date and terrestrial systems simply out of date. The advantage of complementary characteristics of terrestrial and satellite systems had no longer been taken into account sufficiently and a strong tendency prevailed to neglect limitations of GPS and GLONASS or GNSS in general. Users changed over to GPS receivers especially if DGPS services were provided in addition. GNSS came into fashion and if such a phenomenon appears accompanied by powerful marketing, it may be useless to argue.
