In the development of constitutive models for elastomers, there is a need for experimental means of assessing multiaxial performance of models and of validating their implementations in numerical simulations of inhomogeneous deformation. This paper proposes the use of automated biaxial tensile testing for both purposes. The approach is illustrated with experiments on latex rubber film, carried out on the Flexible Biaxial Film Tester developed at Oxford. Biaxial tests on perforated specimens, with video recording of deformation patterns, were used to assess the modelling of inhomogeneous strain. Results are used to assess the performance of a particular three-parameter constitutive model proposed recently: it is found that homo-gemeous and inhomogeneous biaxial response can be predicted on the basis of uniaxial test results.
