PHENOM 2000: an undergraduate project in medical instrumentation for integrated design across the curriculum

This paper describes an undergraduate design project in medical instrumentation. PHENOM stands for Personal HEart fuNctiOn Monitor. This portable, microcontroller-based device measures electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG). Theproject provides hands-on experiences for students to integrate their engineering skills in analog and digital design, microprocessor, software development, and digital signal processing and to work in a setting analogous to industrial R&D.
