Tissue NO was measured in rat somatosensory cortex using NO-sensitive electrochemical microsensors during functional activation of the brain by electrical stimulation of the forepaw, while simultaneously measuring cortical blood flow by laserDoppler flowmetry. Increases in NO were observed, which preceded the rise in blood flow, suggesting that NO is involved in the coupling of blood flow with changes in neuronal activity.
