The ever increasing disposal costs as well as stringent environmental regulations have necessitated alternative ways of handling hazardous waste. Vitrification technology presents a product based recycling approach to the problem. Five U.S. Air Force waste streams were characterized and a bench scale feasibility study was conducted. Four formulations were developed and subsequently processed through a pilot system. The mass balance and incorporation of hazardous metal from the Seiler high temperature vitrification pilot system have been reported and critically evaluated. Glass-ceramic non-hazardous products were developed with spinel and augite phases in a glass matrix. The products had critical performance properties. The effect of salt content and waste variability have been studied and some solutions have been recommended.
