Over the last few years, the Olefins/Styrenics New Product Development Group of Witco's Polymer Chemicals SBU has been engaged in a program to develop new and better antistatic agents for a variety of polymers and applications. An effective internal anti-static agent for engineering plastics has been an industry opportunity for some time. In Witco's hands, materials patented for this application have been marginally effective. This paper will discuss the development of sulfonic acid based anti-static agents for polystyrene and Plexiglas.
