The mechanical performance of a thermoplastic matrix composite can be modified by changing the properties of the interphase. Two series of composites were each made with three different molecular weights of Ultem-type polyimide interphases. The two composite series used polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) as matrix polymers. The mechanical performance of the composites were evaluated by unidirectional tension, three point bending and notched fatigue testing. Composite structure-property relationships were developed using properties of the constitutive components.
