Much of the mass of a battery is comprised of non-reactive materials. This includes current collectors, electrode substrates, and the battery container or pressure vessel. PowerCore reconfigures these battery materials to serve as elements of a structural sandwich panel. The effective specific energy of the new device can be doubled. This paper describes development progress on NiH_2 embodiments for low earth orbiting spacecraft and NiMH embodiments for other applications.
