Commercial diesel fuel produced by Neste Oy was reformulated by reducing sulphur content to <=0.005 wt-percent and total aromatics to <=20 vol-percent. The amount of heavy aromatics was limited and cetane number was increased to >=53. The change in emissions compared to standard EN590 fuels was: NO_x +-0 ... - 13 percent, particulates -5 ... -40percent, particulate PAHs - 10 ... - 70 percent, and mutagenticity of particulates - 30 percent ... - 90 percent. Exhaust odour and cold start smoke were also reduced. Since final boiling point and density of the fuel were not significantly reduced there was no remarkable change in fuel economy. Oxidation catalysts and particulate filters can be used because of the very low fuel sulphur content. Marketing of reformulated diesel fuels was promoted by a tax credit of 0.15 FIM/litre (approx approx 0.025 ECU/litre).
