Glass fiber composites were used for the first time by the Washington State Department of Transportation in 1995 to strengthen pier caps constructed in 1929 that had deteriorated due to the effects of alkali-silica reaction. The selection of glass fiber composite materials was in part experimental, since the bridge was scheduled for replacement in 10 years. After 5 years of service the structure was inspected with no signs of deterioration. Following the February 28, 2001 Nisqually Earthquake a subsequent inspection was made which revealed no signs of damage from seismic activity. Glass fiber composites have been scrutinized for use in exterior environments due to concern for loss of physical properties from water and alkali exposure. This paper will discuss the materials, installation and empirical findings from subsequent project inspection
