The development of controlled release (CR) systems as such begun in the 1960's, first in the pharmaceutical area and then in the veterinary area, although some of the technologies involved have been used for a much longer time simply for the protection of substances of various types. In the past thirty years, CR of ingredients has been also considered for other applications, i.e. agriculture, home gardening, foods, cosmetics and fragrances, consumer goods and personal care products, household products and office items as well as clothing.
