Production of polymer capsules with active ingredients for use as controlled-release delivery systems, e.g. for pharmaceuticals, involves non-radical mini-emulsion polymerisation in presence of active ingredient and surfactant
A method for the production of polymer capsules, pellets or droplets containing an active ingredient or substance involves non-radical polymerisation of suitable monomers in a mini-emulsion containing the active ingredient(s) and ionic or non-ionic surfactant(s). A method for the production of polymer capsules, pellets or droplets (PC) containing an active ingredient or substance involves: (a) preparation of a mini-emulsion containing monomers (I) which are polymerizable by non-radical emulsion polymerisation, active ingredient(s) or substance(s) (II) and surfactant(s) (III) to stabilize the mini-emulsion, especially non-ionic surfactants (preferably non-polymeric, preferably low-mol. wt.) or ionic surfactants; (b) performing non-radical polymerisation with in-situ encapsulation or inclusion of component (II); and (c) optionally isolating the PC. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method for the production of (PC) by: (a) preparation of a mini-emulsion containing di- or poly-functional epoxide(s), isocyanate(s) or carboxylic acid anhydride(s) (monomer I'), compound(s) which undergo polyaddition reactions with (I') (monomer I''), and components (II) and (III) as above; (b) performing a poly-addition reaction between (I') and (I'') in the mini-emulsion, with in situencapsulation etc. as above; and (c) optionally isolating PC; (2) polymer capsules etc. with an active ingredient (PC) as obtained by this method; (3) PC as described above, with active ingredient(s) or substance(s) in the polymer matrix forming the capsules etc., in which the wall layers consist of a polymer obtained by non-radical mini-emulsion polymerisation, especially polycondensation, polyaddition or homopolymerization of suitable monomers, and the active ingredient is preferably a hydrophobic or amphiphilic substance which is homogeneously miscible with the monomer system; and (4) cosmetics, body care products, pharmaceuticals, hygiene products, food, adhesives, detergents/cleaning agents and packaging containing PC.
