The influence of the protective release liner on transdermal product stability

The protective release liner is an important component of a matrix (drug-in- adhesive) transdermal patch. As these patches are thin and flexible the release liner provides the physical support, both during the product manufacturing stage and for the patient when handling the patch prior to attaching it to the skin. To allow easy separation of the protective liner/adhesive interface, surface coatings, typically of silicones provide the apprpriate "release" characteristics.
