Osmotic release mechanisms have been previously identified as an important mechanism for the sustained delivery of drugs and therapeutic agents in many different applications. The osmotic agent within the material forms solution droplets as water ingresses, which leads to a fracturing of the material around the droplet and subsequent release of the osmotic agent/drug. The aim of this study was to image the water uptake and the resulting release by H NMR imaging and He combined scanning micro ion beam analysis.
