Now more than ever, drug delivery scientists are challenged with a wealth of opportunities in developing innovative drug delivery systems for oral administration. The impetus for this is three-fold: (a) the recognition of a need to develop an orally bioavailable formulation in a timely fashion, (b) the avalanche of drug candidates made possible by high throughput drug discovery paradigms, and (c) a better understanding of the interplay of polymer chemistry and cell biology in the design of an oral drug delivery sy6stem that meets the needs of peptide and protein drugs.
