SAXS investigation of the silica gel with carbon deposit

A series of carbon-silica gels (carbosils) differing in carbon deposit contents were investigated by SAXS and gas adsorption (nitrogen adsorption). For the investigated series of carbosils the satisfaction of power-law scattering conditions in a broad range of values of q was observed. The estimated values of exponent alpha were changed from 4.6 to 4.3 according to the contents of carbon in the sample. The volume pore size distribution function F_V(D) and specific surface areas were calculated from the SAXS data. A fair agreement between the results obtained from the SAX scattering data and from the adsorption method (BET) was confirmed. The SAXS data suggest that carbon fills some of the pores completely but it does not deposit on the surface of all pores evenly.
