Phosphate glasses could be a great interest as bone substitution materials, due to their chemistry close to that of bone and their property of being completely soluble. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of the chemical composition on the mechanical properties and the solubility of a range of phosphate glasses in the system P_2O_5-CaO-Na_2O. The Young Modulus (E), Vickers hardness (HV) and fracture toughness (K_(IC)) were evaluated by Vickers and Knoop indentation tests, and the solubility In Vitro was evaluated by mass loss per unit time measurements. Solubility tests were carried out in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37deg C. Superficial changes during soaking were observed by Optical and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy.
