Hydroxyapatite-tricalcium phosphate as a filler for enchondroma of the metacarpals and phalanges of the hand

The efficacy of a hydroxyapatite-tricalcium phosphate (HAP-TCP) filler for metacarpal and phalangeal bone defects was studied by comparing 17 patients treated with HAP-TCP and 16 who received iliac autografts. There were no significant differences in age or the rate of pathologic fracture between the HAP-TCP and iliac autograft groups. There were also no significant differences in the total active motion (TAM) recovery time, grip power recovery time, autograft union time, HAP-TCP bonding time, and fracture union time.
