Clinical evaluation of biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic use in orthopaedic lesions

Direct osteomyelitis in traumatic large bone defects extrusive osteolysis in revision of total hip replacement prosthesis involving massive bone defects and bone tumoral lesions were grafted with a micromacroporous biphasic calcium phosphate (HA/ beta -TCP) bioceramic granules to fill lost bone. Besides serving as a filler, this material was also used as a drug carrier in order to prevent infections during large invasive surgery procedures. The material has interconnective porous structure and good compression strength resistance and demonstrated a strong union with the surrounding bone, a high rate of bone ingrowth and no decrease in graft volume.
