The paper examines fringing loss and tapered winding structure in low-profile inductors carrying high-frequency (200 KHz) AC current for use in a 60-W PFC power converter. The effect of air gaps on the fringing loss in the PCB winding is analyzed. The use of a flux "keep-away" region for the conductors of a planar winding design is modeled by FEA.
