Site characterization for a potential high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain,Nevada,includes studies of seismic hazards such as ground shaking and surface rupturing associated with active faults in and adjacent to the site.Most faults with documented Quaternary activity are located in areas surrounding Yucca Mountain~1,2,3 and thus are associated primarily with ground motin hazards.A number of faults at Yucca Mountain are mapped at the surface and subsurface in the volcanic rocks of the potential repository block~4,5,6 (Warren C.Day and Chris Potter,U.S.Geological Survey,written communication,1995).Future surface displacements on these faults could pose the potential repository and waste-handling facilities.Evaluation of fault-displacement potential within the repository block is therefore,a critical part of the site characterization process.
