Reliable and effective design strategies for engineered barriers at Yucca Mountain

Published calculations show annual doses from a proposed Yucca Mountain repository site would greatly exceed reasonable guidelines for future maximally exposed individuals.Here we review existing engineered barrier system (EBS) designs and isolation strategies.Our emphasis is on effective design concepts that assure with high predictive reliability that calculated peak annual doses are sufficiently low to protect public health and safety.
