International safeguards approaches have been developed for the final disposal of spent fuel in geologic repositories. The goal of these approaches is to assure with a high degree of confidence that the nuclear material contained in spent fuel declared to be transferred into a repository is indeed transferred into the repository and remains there. This is accomplished through the use of the safeguards techniques of design information verification, nuclear material accountancy, and containment and surveillance. These techniques have been applied to generic repository facility designs in order to develop model safeguards approaches. The model safeguards approaches take into account diversion path analysis and detection of diversion. These model safeguards approaches are intended to be used as the bases for the development of facility safeguards approaches for actual repository facilities.
